The Beaver Valley Mall opens and the mill town main streets empty
1970
Center Township, Pennsylvania
The Cafaro Company opened a million square feet of enclosed mall on a township hilltop in 1970, anchored by Joseph Horne, Gimbels and Sears. It was built to serve steel wages from Aliquippa, Ambridge, Midland and Beaver Falls, and it pulled the shopping off their main streets years before the mills themselves closed. When the steel went in the early 1980s the mall stayed and the downtowns did not.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
