The Erie plant that built locomotives for a century
1907
Lawrence Park, Erie County, Pennsylvania
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
General Electric put a works here in 1907 and built the company town of Lawrence Park around it, and for most of a century Erie made the diesel electric locomotives that pulled American freight. Employment ran into the tens of thousands and is now a fraction of that. Wabtec owns it and it still turns out locomotives, which is more than most American industrial towns of this size can say.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
