The Detroit Zoo opens without bars on the cages
1928
Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, Michigan
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
When it opened in 1928 this was the first zoo in the United States built around bar-less habitats, using moats and ditches to hold animals instead of iron. The 125 acre site straddles Royal Oak and Huntington Woods, but the land and the name belong to the City of Detroit, several miles south.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
