Robert Moses had relief labour throw up six brick buildings in a half circle around a seal pool, to Aymar Embury's designs, and opened the zoo on 3 July 1935. The animal houses were straight cages with tiled floors, which was standard in 1935 and indefensible by the 1980s. It closed in 1988 for a rebuild costing some 36 million dollars and reopened in 1993 with the Embury exteriors kept and everything behind them replaced.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
