Brookfield Zoo opens with moats instead of cages
1934
Brookfield, Illinois

Brookfield opened on 216 acres in 1934 and built its enclosures with moats and ditches rather than bars, an approach that drew attention well past Chicago. It was the first zoo in the United States to exhibit giant pandas. Su Lin, the first of them, was eventually taxidermied and put on display at the Field Museum.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
