The Cobden Appleknockers, a town of a thousand in the state final
1964
Cobden, Union County, Illinois

Illinois ran one basketball tournament for every school in the state regardless of size, and in 1964 a town of about a thousand people in the orchard country reached the final and lost by nine. The nickname came from fruit picking and was meant as an insult by somebody else first. The state split into classes seven years later, which ended that kind of run for good.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
