Roosevelt was Gary's high school for Black students, and on 19 March 1955 its Panthers played Indianapolis Crispus Attucks for the Indiana state basketball title. Both schools were segregated, so the state final was contested by two all Black teams. Attucks won 97 to 74 and became the first all Black school in the country to take a state championship in an integrated tournament. The building later ran as a charter school and closed in 2020 after a winter of burst pipes.
