Rogers Locomotive Works built The General

Thomas Rogers began building locomotives in Paterson in 1832 and the works turned out more than six thousand of them before it closed in 1905, enough that most nineteenth century American railroads owned at least one. The most famous left here in December 1855 for the Western and Atlantic: The General, stolen by Union raiders in 1862 in the Great Locomotive Chase. The erecting shop is now the Paterson Museum, which also holds John Holland's two experimental submarines, one of them tested in the Passaic in 1878 and scuttled by its inventor before it was dug back up in 1927.
