The Astral Apartments, model housing for refinery workers
Franklin Street, Greenpoint
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Charles Pratt built these flats for the men at his Astral Oil refinery, with interior courtyards, a library and a kindergarten, at a moment when most tenements had neither light nor air. The design was meant as a rebuke to ordinary tenement building and drew visitors studying housing reform.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
