Bertram Goodhue's part-Egyptian, part-Byzantine pile with a tiled pyramid and a hand holding a torch on top. An arson fire in 1986 burned for seven hours and damaged about a million books. Volunteers froze 700,000 of them to stop mould while they were dried.
