The John F. Kennedy Memorial Library grew out of a book tea

The Hialeah Woman's Club held a book tea in 1924, came away with fifty volumes, and shelved them in a member's front room as the city's first library. The collection moved to a portable classroom at South Hialeah Elementary, was wrecked by the 1926 hurricane, and spent years in a room at city hall. The John F. Kennedy Memorial Library opened in July 1965 as the permanent central branch, and Hialeah still runs its own city library system instead of using the county's.
