The Carnegie Library that Boulder built as a Greek temple

Andrew Carnegie put up 15,000 dollars for the building and the city agreed to spend 1,500 a year keeping it open. Boulder liked to call itself the Athens of the West, so architect Thomas McLaren modelled the library on a small Greek temple that had recently been dug up near Athens. It served as the town's main library until the collection outgrew it in the early 1960s. It reopened in 1983 as the Carnegie Library for Local History and now holds the county's photographs, maps and oral histories.
