The Capitol Theatre, the Fillmore's replacement in Passaic
1971
326 Monroe Street, Passaic, New Jersey
The Capitol opened as a vaudeville house in October 1921 and had sunk to showing adult films by the time the Fillmore East closed in 1971. John Scher took it over and reopened it as a rock hall that December with the J. Geils Band and Humble Pie. The Grateful Dead played it more than forty times, and the house video and radio feeds turned Passaic shows into King Biscuit broadcasts and bootlegs that circulated for decades. It closed in 1989 and was knocked down in April 1991 for a shopping plaza.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
