The Eastown Theatre turns a movie palace into Detroit's loudest room
1969
Detroit, Michigan
This 2,500 seat cinema opened on Harper Avenue in 1931 and showed films until 1967. Converted to a rock hall, it booked Pink Floyd, Cream, the Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Alice Cooper and Yes for three to five dollars a ticket. The city shut it in 1973 over health and safety violations. Alice Cooper said later that Detroit crowds turned up straight from work rather than going home to change.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
