The Bayonne refinery strikes and the mayor on Standard Oil's payroll
1915
Constable Hook, Bayonne, New Jersey
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Refinery workers on Constable Hook, most of them Polish immigrants, walked out of Standard Oil and Tidewater in July 1915 over pay and hours. Police and company guards fired on the crowds and at least five strikers were killed that summer. The mayor who sent the police in, Pierre Garven, was at the same time drawing a salary from Standard Oil as its attorney. A second strike in October 1916 brought another thirteen days of shooting in the streets.
