The 1926 Passaic textile strike

Botany Worsted cut wages ten percent in the autumn of 1925 and the other woollen mills followed. More than fifteen thousand workers walked out in January 1926 behind Albert Weisbord, making this the first large American strike run by communist organisers. Police broke picket lines with clubs, tear gas and fire hoses, and smashed the cameras of newsreel men filming them. The last mill settled in March 1927, after the American Federation of Labor took the strike over and the communists stepped aside to let it end.
