The Battle of Plattsburgh
1814
Plattsburgh, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
A British army of eleven thousand veterans came down the Champlain corridor toward New York, and their advance depended on controlling the lake. An American squadron under Macdonough anchored in the bay with springs on its cables so it could wind itself around and fight with fresh guns, and destroyed the British fleet in two hours. The army turned back. The peace talks at Ghent changed terms within weeks.
