Where Perry built the fleet that took Lake Erie
1813
Presque Isle Bay, Erie, Pennsylvania

Perry had no fleet, so he built one here out of green timber cut nearby, in a bay whose sandbar the British could not cross and neither, at first, could he. The ships had to be floated over it on camels, wooden pontoons, with their guns taken off. In September 1813 he beat the British squadron off Put-in-Bay, moving to the Niagara by rowboat when his flagship was shot to pieces, and wrote the note about having met the enemy. A reconstruction of the Niagara is berthed in the same bay.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
