Johnson's Island

Johnson's Island, Sandusky Bay, Ohio
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Union built a prison for Confederate officers on an island in Sandusky Bay, reasoning correctly that Lake Erie in winter was its own wall. About nine thousand men passed through, and a Confederate plot to seize a warship and free them in 1864 got as far as hijacking two lake steamers before falling apart. A cemetery with more than two hundred Confederate graves remains on the island, now reached by causeway past lake cottages.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
