The Alexander Smith carpet mills on the Saw Mill River
1871
Yonkers, New York

Alexander Smith and Sons grew from an 1871 mill into nineteen mill buildings and six rows of workers' housing along the Saw Mill River, one of the largest carpet operations anywhere, running hundreds of looms with thousands of Yonkers hands. During the Second World War the looms turned out tents and blankets. The company stopped production in 1954 in the middle of a labour dispute and the city never replaced the payroll.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
