Temple Emanu-El, built by Port Richmond's merchants
1907
Port Richmond, Staten Island, New York
CC0 · Wikimedia Commons
Jewish shopkeepers on Port Richmond Avenue, then the busiest commercial street on the island, put up this clapboard synagogue in 1907 a block off their own storefronts. It is Classical Revival in wood rather than stone, with a pedimented porch on two columns and an octagonal drum carrying a dome that was originally painted gold. It joined the National Register in 2007, a century after it opened.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
