New Lots Reformed Church, the clapboard church the New Lots farmers built themselves
1824
East New York, Brooklyn, New York
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The farmers out here decided the ride to Flatbush was too long and put up their own church in 1823 and 1824, a plain wood frame rectangle on a rough stone foundation. The graveyard beside it is older than the building and holds Revolutionary War soldiers and people who were enslaved on the surrounding farms. Half the street names in East New York can be read off its headstones: Van Siclen, Schenck, Van Sinderen, Remsen.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
