Taconite saves the range
Silver Bay, Minnesota
![]()
E.W. Davis spent thirty years working out how to crush the low-grade rock nobody wanted, magnetically separate the iron and roll it into marble-sized pellets that blast furnaces liked better than raw ore. He was regarded as a crank for most of it. Reserve Mining built a plant and a whole company town here to do it, and the range went back to work.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
