Swedeland, a 1710 Swedish village turned steel company town
1919
Upper Merion Township, Pennsylvania
Swedish settlers founded this stretch of the Schuylkill in 1710 and called it Matsunk, a name that gave way to Swedeland late in the 1800s. Alan Wood Steel put a blast furnace plant and coking works here in 1919 and threw up more than a hundred houses for the workers, so the village grew more in two years than it had in the previous fifty. The works shut down in 1980. The quarries the company dumped its coking waste into are now a federal Superfund site.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
