Swarthmore College opens as a coeducational Quaker school
1864
Swarthmore, Pennsylvania
Hicksite Friends chartered the college in 1864 and held the first classes in 1869, admitting women and men together at a time when almost nothing else did. It dropped the religious affiliation by 1906. The borough around it took the college's name, which came in turn from Swarthmoor Hall in England, the home of Quakerism's founder George Fox.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
