Sugarloaf Mound, the last mound left in Mound City

St. Louis was called Mound City for the roughly forty Mississippian earthworks that stood on its riverfront, and by 1875 street grading and building had taken nearly all of them. Sugarloaf is the one platform mound still standing inside the city, raised by people connected to Cahokia across the river. The Osage Nation bought a third of it in 2009 and finished acquiring the rest in 2025, putting the oldest built thing in St. Louis back under Osage ownership.
