Moundville, twenty-nine mounds around a plaza
1100
Hale County, Alabama
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
Twenty-nine earthen mounds around a plaza, and for a time the largest settlement in North America after Cahokia, perhaps a thousand people inside the palisade and several thousand around it. The engraved stone and copper found here defines a whole Mississippian art style.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
