Mound Key and the Calusa
1000
Estero Bay, Florida
Public domain · Wikimedia Commons
The Calusa built an empire on fish rather than farming, unusual anywhere, with an island capital raised entirely from shell, canals cut through it, and a king who took tribute from most of south Florida. Archaeologists found a walled watercourt here big enough to hold live fish by the tonne. They fought off the Spanish for two centuries and were destroyed by disease and slave raids instead.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
