Studebaker: wagons, then cars, then nothing

Two brothers with sixty-eight dollars and a forge became the largest vehicle maker in the world on wagons, Union army wagons, farm wagons, a carriage for Lincoln, and then made the jump to automobiles that almost no wagon builder survived. They built the Avanti and the Champion here. The plant closed in December 1963 and took about a fifth of the city's jobs with it in a single announcement.
