Oliver's chilled plough breaks the prairie
1857
South Bend, Indiana
Midwestern sod stuck to wood and shattered cast iron. James Oliver worked out how to cool a mould so the plough's face hardened to a glassy skin while the body behind stayed tough, and the sticky black earth slid off it. He patented the process, made South Bend an industrial city alongside Studebaker, and put a great deal of grassland under the plough.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
