St. Peter's Episcopal and Henry Beard Delany

Delany was born into slavery in St. Marys, Georgia in 1858, and his family moved here after emancipation. He learned bricklaying and carpentry from his father and went to a school the Freedmen's Bureau paid for. In 1881 the rector of this parish, Owen Thackera, funded a scholarship that sent him to St. Augustine's College in Raleigh, where he stayed on the faculty, put up the chapel, a library and a hospital with his students, and later became the first African American elected a bishop suffragan of the Episcopal Church.
