St. Augustine's, the Black Episcopal congregation that won an architecture prize
1958
Gary, Indiana
The congregation was chartered in 1927 as a Black Episcopal parish, in the same year Gary's schools were being pulled apart by race. The building it put up in 1958 won awards two years later from the American Institute of Architects and the Church Architectural Guild. It joined the National Register in 2013, nominated for listing by one of its own parishioners.
