St. Jude treats its children free

Danny Thomas, a struggling entertainer, promised a shrine if he found his way, and built a children's cancer hospital that treats every patient free and desegregated its wards from the day it opened in still-segregated Memphis. Childhood leukaemia survival has gone from about 4 percent to over 90 since.
