South Shore Plaza opens in the open air in 1961 and gets its roof in 1976

Filene's opened a three level store here in February 1961 and the rest of the plaza followed that October, thirty shops in a row in the open air with the Boston Pops playing at the ceremony. The roof went on in 1976, which is the change that turned the American strip plaza into the enclosed mall. Jordan Marsh, Lord and Taylor and Sears all arrived around that switch. It now runs to roughly 1.6 million square feet of selling space, among the largest in the country.
