The Avenues opened on 26 September 1990 out on the Interstate 95 corridor, where Philips Highway meets Southside Boulevard, with roughly 150 shops on two levels. The original anchors were JCPenney, Maison Blanche and Sears, and Dillard's joined the following year. The building runs past a million square feet, which made it the biggest enclosed mall in the region and pulled a good deal of Jacksonville retail out to the ring road. The Sears wing closed in 2019.
