Shrewsbury Road carried the first highway into New Orleans

Shrewsbury took its name in the mid nineteenth century and sat about a mile upriver from the New Orleans line. In the early twentieth century Shrewsbury Road was an official link in the Jefferson Highway and later US 61, which made it the main way into New Orleans by car. The name faded late in the century as unincorporated Jefferson grew together, and the area is generally called Old Jefferson now.
