Wilbur Wright picked this field in 1909 to teach two Army lieutenants, Frank Lahm and Frederick Humphreys, to fly the government's first aeroplane. Both soloed that October. The Army opened its first aviation school here in 1911, civilian flying carried on without a break afterwards, and on 12 August 1918 the Post Office Department flew the first of its own airmail runs out of the same field.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
