Essex Skypark still flies off grass, with water runways next door

William Diffendahl carved an airstrip out of farmland on the Back River Neck peninsula and it was flying under his own name by 1943, when the Glenn L. Martin plant up the road was turning out B-26 Marauders and a good part of the neighbourhood worked there. A 1947 Maryland airport directory lists two intersecting grass runways, the longer of them 2,200 feet. A later owner added water runways on Back River so the field could take floatplanes as well, the name changed to Essex Skypark in 1967, and it is still a public airport landing aircraft on grass.
