The San Francisco and San Jose Railroad reached San Mateo in 1863, the first rail line down the peninsula and the reason every town on this side of the ridge sits in a line. Charles Polhemus, a director of the railroad, had already bought the land south of San Mateo Creek and platted a town on it in 1862, betting correctly that the stop would make the lots worth something. Trains have called at this spot continuously ever since, now as Caltrain.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
