Isaiah Montgomery, who had been enslaved by Jefferson Davis's brother, bought swampland from a railroad and founded a town owned and governed entirely by Black people. It cleared its own timber, ran its own bank, cotton oil mill, hospital and newspaper, and stayed independent for decades. Medgar Evers sold insurance out of it and civil rights organisers used it as a place they could sleep safely.
