North Brentwood, the first African American town incorporated in the county

Wallace Bartlett, who had commanded United States Colored Troops in the Civil War, sold the first lot here to Henry Randall in 1891, on low ground beside the Northeast Branch that flooded and that nobody else wanted. The settlement was known as Randalltown until it incorporated under a new name in 1924, the first African American municipality in Prince George's County. Its 128 historic buildings run from frame Victorian cottages through 1920s bungalows to postwar brick.
