Republic Aviation and the Thunderbolt
1939
Farmingdale, New York
The plant here turned out more than fifteen thousand P-47 Thunderbolts, a fighter so heavily built that pilots flew them home with cylinders shot out and wings full of holes. Long Island built aircraft from the Spirit of St. Louis onward, and for half a century the potato fields between the towns were runways.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
