Aetna, the gunpowder company town that became a Gary neighbourhood

The Aetna Powder Works founded this town in 1881, a quarter century before Gary existed, and made explosives here until the plant shut after the First World War. Gary annexed Aetna in 1928, and the building boom that followed left the neighbourhood with an unusual run of art deco houses. An industrial corridor along Interstate 65 still separates it from the rest of the city.
