A school has stood on this ground since 1902, and the high school that grew on it was for white students only. Black children in Mesquite went to the George W. Carver School, opened in the late 1930s on the other side of the colour line. Mesquite Independent School District did not integrate until 1964, a decade after the Supreme Court said it had to.
