Poydras is settled by Canary Islanders under Spanish Louisiana

Spain recruited families from the Canary Islands in the late 1770s and settled them along Bayou Terre aux Boeufs to hold the water approaches to New Orleans. Their descendants, the Isleños, farmed and fished this end of St. Bernard Parish and kept an archaic Canarian Spanish alive here well into the twentieth century. The place later took the name of Julien Poydras, a French born planter and philanthropist of the Spanish colonial era.
