A New Orleans fur trader picked this limestone shelf above the flood line in 1764 and sent his fourteen year old clerk Auguste Chouteau upriver to start clearing it. France had already secretly given Louisiana to Spain, so the French village that grew here spent its first forty years under a Spanish flag and kept speaking French anyway. The street grid Chouteau paced out is still the shape of the blocks by the river.
