Ste. Genevieve, the French town older than the state
1735
Ste. Genevieve, Missouri

Founded by French colonists out of the Illinois Country decades before Missouri existed, and the reason the state has any French colonial architecture left at all. Three of the five surviving poteaux en terre houses in North America stand here, built with their posts set straight into the ground rather than on a sill, which is why so few of them are left. Congress made the town a National Historical Park in 2018. The original settlement was on the floodplain and moved uphill after the flood of 1785.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
