Spain's East Florida governor named the town for Ferdinand VII on the first day of 1811 and had it laid out that May under the Laws of the Indies, the sixteenth century rulebook for founding a colonial town. Nothing in the Western Hemisphere was platted that way again. The open ground still called Plaza San Carlos fronted a Spanish fort that has since vanished. When David Levy Yulee ran his railroad to Centre Street in the 1850s he platted a new Fernandina a mile south and left this one a quiet residential grid.
That was 1 of the hidden places.
