Florissant is settled as a French village called Fleurissant

French Creole farmers settled this valley northwest of St. Louis in the 1780s and named it for the way things bloomed there. Spanish administrators of Upper Louisiana organized it as a village in 1786 and gave it the name St. Ferdinand, which the parish kept long after the town went back to Florissant. It is now the largest city in St. Louis County.
