Port Perry, the town the Edgar Thomson rail yards swallowed

John Perry laid this town out at the mouth of Turtle Creek in the 1790s and advertised its harbour as the best on the western waters. It got a lock and dam in 1841, a railroad in 1857, and a boatyard that built about half the coal boats on the river plus two million gun stocks for the Civil War. Then Carnegie's Edgar Thomson works opened across the creek and spent seventy years buying up and razing the town for track. In 1914 trade journals reckoned more freight tonnage passed this spot than anywhere else on earth. The last house was torn down in 1944.
